BUYING A HORSE FROM
WHIMSY BROOK FARM

Horses are great companions and can provide years of good fun and exercise. We hope that we have just the right equine for you.

While we believe we breed the best quality horses possible, unfortunately it is a costly business. Needless to say, the younger a horse is, and the less time we have spent training it or keeping it, the less expensive the animal will be. Our stock is handled from the day they are born and given the best of care, and all our animals are registered blood stock. Because we recognize that horses are big ticket items, we have negotiated a special arrangement with a local bank to provide secured and unsecured horse loans to make purchasing a truly fine animal possible.

Because we are breeders, when you buy a horse from us, you are buying it wholesale. Normally, we only deal with trainers, and we assume that you have had a discussion with your trainer regarding the amount of commission or percentage of the sale price they expect in return for their services as your consultant. While the traditional commission is 10%, if you want your trainer to travel to the far ends of the earth and look at a great many horses, you are going to have to compensate him or her properly for the effort and expense, and a flat fee or hourly compensation plus travel expenses may be more appropriate. Remember, time is money.

If you do not have a trainer, we will consider talking to you directly, but please do not introduce a trainer into the picture after the fact, as this will end our negotiation. We cannot compensate your trainer out of our wholesale price.

It costs just as much to keep a good horse as it does to keep one that is unsound, untalented, or has a bad disposition. If you board your horse, you will probably spend $1000-$3000 a month between board, shoes, lessons, tack, show expenses and vet bills. So please buy the best horse you can afford so that your investment is not only worthwhile, but gives you great pleasure with few problems.
